Humanistic Counselling

At Chippenham Counselling Practice, I take a Humanistic approach to counselling; an approach that values the whole person rather than focusing solely on a problem or diagnosis. It’s about helping you reconnect with who you truly are, understand your emotions, and move toward greater self-acceptance and personal growth.

Based in Pewsham, Chippenham, I offer both in-person and online counselling for adults aged 18+, providing a calm, confidential space to explore what’s happening in your life and what might help you move forward.

What is the Humanistic Approach?

The Humanistic approach to counselling is built on the belief that each of us has the potential to live a meaningful, fulfilling life — even when circumstances or past experiences have left us feeling lost or disconnected. It emphasises self-awareness, choice and personal responsibility rather than labels or “fixing” behaviour.

In Humanistic therapy, the focus is on you as a person, not as a set of symptoms. It’s about understanding how your experiences, emotions and beliefs shape the way you see yourself and your world. Through this understanding, you can begin to make choices that feel more authentic and aligned with who you really are.

Rather than asking “what’s wrong with me?”, Humanistic counselling encourages a gentler question: “what has happened to me, and how am I responding?”

How Humanistic Counselling Works in Practice

Sessions are collaborative. You lead the way, deciding what feels important to explore, while I offer empathy, curiosity and support.

Together we might look at:

What’s working and what isn’t in your life right now;

How past experiences have shaped the way you think or relate;

What you value, and what feels missing;

What a more balanced, content version of you might look like.

Humanistic counselling doesn’t rely on strict techniques or quick fixes. Instead, it’s about the relationship between counsellor and client; one based on trust, honesty and respect. This therapeutic relationship becomes a safe space where new perspectives and self-understanding can develop naturally.

When Humanistic Counselling May Help

People often seek Humanistic therapy when they feel stuck, disconnected, or unsure who they are anymore.

It can be particularly helpful for:

low self-esteem or self-worth

anxiety or depression linked to identity and purpose

recovering from controlling or invalidating relationships

grief, life transitions or burnout

anyone wanting to rediscover meaning or direction

Because Humanistic counselling sees you as the expert on your own experience, it can be especially empowering for those who’ve lost confidence in their own judgement.

Why Choose This Approach?

I’m trained as an Integrative Humanistic counsellor, meaning I draw on several evidence-based approaches but always through a Humanistic lens, one that values compassion, authenticity and personal growth.

My counselling room in Pewsham, Chippenham provides a private, peaceful environment for in-person work, and I also offer online sessions for those further afield. Clients come from across Wiltshire, including Calne, Corsham and Melksham, seeking a supportive space to regain clarity and confidence.

What to Expect

Each session lasts 50 minutes, with the first meeting focused on understanding what brings you to counselling and what you hope to gain. From there, we work together at your pace, adjusting the process as your understanding deepens.

Many people find that as they reconnect with themselves, they also rediscover motivation, self-compassion and hope for the future.
